Three More Villagers in Svay Rieng Face Arrest

After Svay Rieng Provincial Court decided to detain two villagers, Mrs. Meas Srey, 38 and Mr. Prum Chea, 48 on December 23, 2009 over the accusation of purposely destroying Cambodia-Vietnam border demarcation, three more villagers are now facing arrest over the matter.

The three people, who are summoned to court, included Prak Chea, 28, Neang Phally, 39, and Prak Koeun, 38. These villagers were asked to present at court on December 24, joined with Mr. Sam Rainsy, the president of Sam Rainsy Party, by Svay Rieng Investigating Judge Long Kesor Perum.

However, those people ran away after provincial authorities arrested their fellow villagers Meas Srey and Prom Chea.

All five villagers were charged of intentionally destroying border marker Post 185, on 25 October, 2009.

For this reason, Mr. Cheang Am said that the people who fled should not fear to come back home. There would be no arrest.

The message from Mr. Cheang Am was sent by Mr. Pov Pheap, deputy chief of Samrong commune while he was meeting with villagers on Sunday 27 December.

On 13 January, 2010, The Cambodian Human Rights Action Committee (CHRAC), a coalition of 21 NGO members, would

like to officially announce to the public and members of local and international media that Mr. Sam Sokong, lawyer of the Cambodian Defenders’ Project (CDP), will legally represent the two charged persons who have been currently detaining in Svay Rieng Provincial prison namely; Mrs. Prom Chea and Mrs. Meas Srey, while the other three persons; Mr. Prak Chea, Mrs. Neang Phally and Mrs. Prak Koeun, are being sought to be arrested following the arrest warrant No. 157, 158, 159 issued by the Provincial Court on December 25, 2009.
