Local Activists Alleged of Illegal Detention

Two Sam Rainsy Party local activists in Chrey village, Kampong Svay commune, Kampong Svay district, Kampong Thom province were arrested for the accuse of illegally blocking an 18-year-old girl. A man named Ruan Chan aged 47 years old and his wife named Yang Eng also 47, both accused and arrested of blocking the girl, named Yen Chamreun, living next door.

Mrs. Sum Vannak, the victims’ cusin, said that that day Yen Chamreun escaped from being hit by her own mother to hide in Mr. Ruan Chan’s house. He disagreed to let her stay, but she [the girl] requested to wait until his wife [Yang Eng] came so that she could ask for a day rest. Mrs. Yang Eng was going to the maket. Mrs. Vannk added that Ms. Yen, the girl’s mother, asked her to look for her daughter, but she did not know that the girl went to hide in her cousins’ house at all.

Due to the investigation of Mr. Chhuam Run, LICADHO activist showed that the case was unreasonable for the girl ran to hide there. Whereas the house’s owners became the scapegoat of the matter; and accused of illegally blocking the girl. When he interviewed Yen Chamreun, she hesitantly answered the questions; therefore he could conclude that she might be taught to confess that.

Mr. Run added that the arrest took place after they had been summoned 2 days ago, August 7, 2009 ordered by investigating judge, Mr. Thoang Phalla Rainsey and implemented by communal police chief, Hang Heng.

Relevant to the matter, Mr. Chea Yeun, Sam Rainsy councilor, criticized that it was an injustice. The two people did not make any mistake. It was absurd. He added the two families used to have good relationship with each other. Anyone could call on any house. The arrest was so rush; and the accused was unacceptable because the girl was okay. Nothing happened to her. However, he suspected that it might be of political reason for they had just installed a new label of Sam Rainsy Party in front of their house.
