Municipality Sought Inciters behind Demonstration

On July 21, 2009 Phnom Penh Municipality issued a statement to ask Phnom Penh Municipal Police and RCAF to search for those stayed behind the demonstration over 8 story building of Kandal Market’s new project.

In the statement said, “So far the Municipality has heard that there has been an attempt to endlessly develop markets subsequently and, in fact, the new project of Kandal Market located in Kandal Market 1, Daun Penh district, Phnom Penh. The Municipality declares that according to the requests of those traders, Prime Minster Hun Sen formallydecided to suspend all markets developmenbt projects in Phnomn Penh, based on a letter issued on June 16, 2009.”

Meanwhile the statement also wrote that the municipality would ask the authorities, Phnom Penh Police and RCAF to search for those who stay behind demonstration, which cause social insecurity.

On July 20, 2009 some 50 Kandal traders gathered in front of the Phnom Penh Municipality to show their worry about a new development project of the 8-story building, a joint venture between a South Korean company and the local company PPMD. Prime Minister Hun Sen and Interior Minister Sar Keng had agreed in principle to the US$12 million project, which would create 1,000 stores for the market vendors.
