A March Plan by Rong Chhun Prevented

On October 5, 2009 was the World Teacher’s Day. More than 100 teachers from 17 provinces in Cambodia gathered together in Phnom Penh to celebrate the ceremony and request the government for increasing teacher’s salary up to 1million riels per month, but the assembly was not allowed as planed in front of former Assembly Office building.

The march was planned and led by Mr. Rong Chhun, the president of Cambodia Independent Teachers’ Association [CITA] to walk from the old National Assembly to the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports. However, the celebration was asked to do at CITA’s office at #54E0, St 95, Sangkat Boeung Keng Kang III, Khan Chamkarmorn instead.

Moreover, Phnom Penh Municipal Deputy Governor Pa Socheat Vong warned Mr. Rong Chhun to be responsible for unexpected incident. He also said that the municipality would take any action for that.

On the morning of the day, all the streets were blocked to the public and police armed forces about 120 to 150 were scattered all the streets to and in front of the former National Assembly.
