Villager Representatives Arrested in Land Dispute in Svay Rieng

Related to a chronic land dispute between local people in Tras commune, Romeas Hek district, Svay Rieng province and Romeas Hek Rubber Plantation Company or Peam Chaing Rubber Company, a villager representative Yea Yeng was arrested on May 3, 2010, accused of leading hundreds of villagers to protest against the company and committing other criminal offenses.

Romeas Hek district police chief Chum Ry clarified the reason of the arrest that Mr. Yea Yeng had led hundreds of people to protest against the company, confined 2 company staffs and a military officer, and threatened to burn them alive.

Whereas Tras second deputy commune councilor Hae Hem said that the arrest had been illegally and unjustly made against the representative only because they had protested against their land being grabbed by the company. They came to live in the area in 1989.

On May 7, 2010 Svay Rieng Provincial Court issued arrest warrants of 10 other villagers, who hab been involved with the above accusation of Mr. Yea Yeng. However it has not been reported yet the names of those 10 people in the court’s warrants.
