Land Victims Sought Asylum in Thailand

According the report by Secretary/ Monitoring Coordinator for Cambodian Human Rights Action Committee, Mr. Ieng Pich, a villager, named Um Sophy, who lived in Lorpeang village,Taches commune, Kampong Tralanch district, Kampong Chnang provinve and also had protested against KDC Company, has been escaping from the country and seeking asylum in Bangkak city, Thailand. Mrs. Um Sophy had been threatened to arrest and summoned many times by Kampong Chnang Provincial Court and Phnom Penh Municipal Court to clarify the case related to the above area’s land conflict. Her family will apply for refugee status to UNCHR in Bangkak; however, at the moment they are on the condition of food shortage and seeking for assistance from charity and donors.

At the mean time, it is reported that on April 29, 2010 Mrs. Chea Keng, KDC Company owner; and authorities, Provincial Governor, district authorities and Mr. Soy Sopheap, Dem Ampil publisher will have a meeting with the villagers in the area to solve the problem.

Whereas rights group will also monitor the case.
