Villager Arrested in a LandConflict with Heng Development Company

On Saturday, September 4, 2010 a villager representative was arrested in a land dispute between Heng Development Company with those 2,676 families in 7 communes, Kandal Stung district, Kandal province.

Vorn Vun, 45, was captured at about 2:00PM at Restaurant 999, near Kandal Provincial Hall, while he was having lunch, by a group of Kandal Stung RCAF, who are hired by Heng Development Company.

Another representative, Eang Yan, reported to media after the arrest that the company had tried to arrest three representatives, Vorn Von, Chea Hy and him. However, he and his fellow representative had run away before the military could come to their houses. He added that they were charged with destroying the company’s belonging during a protest last year.

Related to this issue, Mr. Men Makara, Kandal Adhoc provincial coordinator asserted that these three representatives; Vorn Vun, Eang Yan and Chea Hy had been summoned to appear at court for questioning on August 4, 2010. Howevcer, they had been unable to look for any lawyers to represent and defend them over the case at all. They had asked for a delay of the questioning. The court had not replied, but issued arrest warrants instead.
