Amatak Publisher Faced Legal Action

The lawsuit threatened to sue by Prince Ranarith for defamation ended after the editor of Moneaksikar Khmer had written a letter of seeking an apology. On 19 December 2008, the office cabinet of Samdech Norodom Ranarith, the chief of Supreme Councils of the King, asserted he would sue Monaksikar Khmer Newspaper Dam Sith, the opposition party supporting newspaper for disinformation in an article saying Samdech Norodom Ranarith had made requests for a mansion in front of the Royal Palace and asked for the appointments of 200 of his supporters to the King’s Cabinet. The cabinet warned that the newspaper would be sued if this newspaper could not find any proof and make any correction to apology for disinformation. Then, around the end of December 2008, the editor Dam Sith wrote a letter of apology to Prince Nordodom Ranariddh and retract previous allegations that the prince had lobbied for special priviledges for him and his supporters. Prince Norodom Ranarith decided not to file a lawsuit against Monaksikar Khmer news.

It was seen that the cabinet official violated the Cambodian law on freedom of access to expression.
